Tom's by Sketty Productions
This low-budget production takes an emotive true story and brings it to life through performances and puppetry that evocatively portray the physical nature of the issue at its heart. The plot deals with the eponymous Tom’s struggle to deal with paralysis and its affect on his relationship with girlfriend Ellen. Played out by a cast of three assisted by two puppeteers against a minimal set, the intelligent use of lighting helps define different scenes whilst the puppetry and sound production add a surreal psychological dimension. Some lighthearted moments help take the edge off what is essentially a dark and moving tale which survives a couple of minor plot issues and finishes on an optimistic note. Nicely constructed, skilfully performed and well worth seeing.
