The sale taking place 19 March includes work in a variety of media by leading artists from Henri Matisse to Andy Warhol, Tracy Emin, Allen Jones and Spencer Tunick. Many of the images on show were instantly recognizable having attracted publicity in the past due to their provocative nature. Phillips say that these are works “that challenge our concepts of gender, sexual imagery and desirability.” Mostly though they are playful attempts by some stellar names to explore the boundaries of decency and taste.

Richard Hamilton at the Serpentine Gallery

This exhibition presents a summary of Hamilton’s political works, a subject ideally suited to his favoured approach of manipulating images taken directly from the mass media, scaling them up and adding new layers of material and meaning. A number of recent works are shown alongside more familiar pieces dating back over five decades that represent the diverse subjects, themes, media and techniques that Hamilton has explored in his attempts to document mass culture.
