Port . Leaders of Industry
In this feature I chose to celebrate the work of some of the architecture and design industry's leading female figures. Occasionally overlooked and often underrated throughout the history of these creative disciplines, women are finally achieving prominence and success, with the announcement in October 2015 that Dame Zaha Hadid was to become the first female recipient of the RIBA Gold Medal for architecture in its 167-year history an indication of shifting attitudes within the establishment.
In an interview that was published in full on Port's website, Hadid proved particularly candid on the subject of confronting the challenges posed by her gender and race. She talked about the "double-edged sword" of being both an Arab and a woman, as well as the importance of self-confidence, hard work and determination to succeed.
Leaders of Industry appeared originally in issue 7 of Port magazine, published in September 2012.
